The Question Winners Would Never Ask

“What are you gonna do for 2 hours?” my colleague asked me incredulously as the teacher indicated I could leave and take a 2 hour lunch.

The question filled me with wonder and I really felt that just that sentence alone describes the distinction between how some people think and how others think.

For me, 2 hours is nothing. I could meditate for an hour. I could write for an hour. I could call someone for an hour. Those 2 hours would get filled up pretty quickly.

The first thing I did when I sat down for my lunch was write this!

It is the people that can’t fill 2 hours that will take up any opportunity, that will let others run their lives. That will do the very basics of sustaining themselves but have no creativity or vision for the rest of their life.

If you can’t think of what to do for 2 hours, of course you can’t wait for someone to give you something to do. You are just waiting for others to fill your life. Maybe the tasks from your job, maybe the drama from your relationships.

You haven’t taken control of the direction and meaning of your life.

How often are you letting someone else give you the direction for your life?

How often are you just surviving, going through the motions to survive instead of acting with true intention and purpose?

If you can’t even fill 2 hours of your life with your own pursuits and ideas then what chance do you have to fill a life?

For me, 2 hours filled me with joy. 2 whole hours to work towards my own goals, to speak to people I care about, to work on projects that matter to me.

The whole task of being alive is not to allow others to run it for you.

So, yes, the tricky questions will come up like, what will you do with 2 hours?

The hardest question of all is what will you do with your life?

When I created time freedom for myself and realised that I had a lot of time which I could do anything with, of course I struggled to know exactly how I could use my time. But if you want to be truly free you have to work out what are the things you would like to be doing in all moments.

If you really want to be free, it doesn’t come easy, someone else isn’t standing there telling you exactly what to do at every moment.

See, some people go nowhere, without direction from others. To be free you need to direct yourself. You need to give yourself the direction you might get from others.

That means knowing what you want to achieve and finding the steps to achieve it. Even if you don’t know what you want to achieve or do, you at least first need to start thinking about it. It all starts with the belief that you have an innate path of fulfilment that is your true path and you have to find it. It starts with the belief that you have an ‘innate genius’ inside of you that would like to be expressed. Whether that is in business, being a parent, writer, creative or any other.

If really time and money were not an issue, what would you do? Filling your life with meaningful and goal driven activities is what makes a good life.

Being able to effectively use your spare time and chose the correct activities that will progress you towards your next goal.

It comes back to the idea that most people don’t have a vision. Most people don’t have a goal outside of surviving. Most people don’t know what to do with 2 hours of free time, and maybe even some don’t even want 2 hours of free time.

If you can’t even fill 2 hours of your life with your own pursuits and ideas then what chance do you have to fill a life?

So, what are you gonna do for 2 hours?
